Claude API Embeddings vs Vector Search Explained

2026-10-20 · 5 min read · SubToAPI Team

The short answer

Claude's API does not generate embeddings, and it is not a vector search engine. These are two different layers of a retrieval pipeline, and Claude sits in neither — it sits on top of both, as the model that reads retrieved text and writes an answer. Embeddings are numeric representations of text produced by an embedding model (like OpenAI's text-embedding-3, Voyage AI's models, or Cohere's embed endpoints). Vector search is the infrastructure that stores those embeddings and finds the nearest ones to a query (Pinecone, Weaviate, pgvector, Qdrant, Chroma, etc.).

If you're comparing "Claude API embeddings" against "vector search" as if they were competing choices, the comparison doesn't really hold — you need both, plus Claude, to build a working retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system. The real question is usually: which embedding model should I pair with Claude, and how does the vector search layer fit into the request flow? This article answers that.

What embeddings actually do

An embedding model takes a chunk of text and converts it into a fixed-length vector of floating-point numbers — typically 768, 1024, or 1536+ dimensions. Text with similar meaning produces vectors that are close together in that vector space. That's the entire job: turn language into geometry so similarity can be measured mathematically.

Embeddings are cheap to compute, stateless, and have nothing to do with generating text. You don't "chat" with an embedding model — you send it text, it returns a vector, done.

Anthropic does not offer an embeddings endpoint in the Claude API. If you want embeddings for a Claude-based pipeline, you still need a dedicated embedding provider. Common choices developers pair with Claude:

What vector search actually does

Vector search is the storage and retrieval layer. Once you have embeddings, you need somewhere to put them and a way to query "give me the 5 most similar vectors to this new vector." That's a vector database or a vector-capable extension of an existing database:

Vector search returns text chunks, not answers. It's a lookup mechanism, nearest-neighbor search over high-dimensional space, usually using cosine similarity or dot product. It has no understanding of your question beyond geometric proximity.

Why Claude fits into neither layer

Claude is a generation model. It takes text input (including retrieved chunks you paste into the prompt) and produces a coherent, reasoned response. It doesn't embed text into vectors as a side effect, and it can't search a vector database on its own — unless you give it a tool to do so.

This is the piece people miss when searching "Claude API embeddings vs vector search": the three components — embed, retrieve, generate — are a pipeline, not alternatives.

query text
   → embedding model → query vector
   → vector database → top-k matching chunks
   → Claude API (with chunks in the prompt) → final answer

A minimal RAG flow

Here's what that looks like end to end. Step 1, embed and store your documents ahead of time (one-time or on content updates):

// Using any embedding provider, e.g. Voyage AI
const res = await fetch("https://api.voyageai.com/v1/embeddings", {
  method: "POST",
  headers: {
    "Authorization": `Bearer ${VOYAGE_KEY}`,
    "Content-Type": "application/json"
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({ input: chunks, model: "voyage-2" })
});
const { data } = await res.json();
// store data[i].embedding in your vector DB alongside chunk text

Step 2, at query time, embed the user's question, search the vector DB, then pass the top matches to Claude as context:

const matches = await vectorDb.query(queryEmbedding, { topK: 5 });
const context = matches.map(m => m.text).join("\n\n");

const response = await fetch("https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages", {
  method: "POST",
  headers: {
    "Authorization": `Bearer ${SUBTOAPI_KEY}`,
    "Content-Type": "application/json"
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    model: "claude-sonnet-4",
    max_tokens: 1024,
    messages: [{
      role: "user",
      content: `Context:\n${context}\n\nQuestion: ${userQuery}`
    }]
  })
});

This is where a tool like SubToAPI fits: it doesn't handle embeddings or vector search, but it turns your existing Claude access into a straightforward HTTPS API for the generation step — application-level API keys, streaming responses for long answers, tool use if you want Claude to call your retrieval function directly, and usage metadata so you can see token cost per RAG query. You still own the embedding and vector search layers; SubToAPI just makes the "ask Claude" step production-ready without you having to manage separate API keys per developer or environment. See /docs/messages for the request format and /docs/streaming if you're streaming long generated answers back to a UI.

Letting Claude call the vector search itself

Instead of always pre-fetching context in your backend, you can expose vector search as a tool and let Claude decide when to call it — useful for multi-turn conversations where not every message needs retrieval:

{
  "name": "search_knowledge_base",
  "description": "Search internal docs for relevant passages",
  "input_schema": {
    "type": "object",
    "properties": { "query": { "type": "string" } },
    "required": ["query"]
  }
}

Claude will call this tool with a query string when it decides retrieval is needed, you execute the vector search, return the results, and Claude incorporates them into its final response. Details on defining and handling tools are in /docs/tools.

Choosing an embedding model for a Claude pipeline

Since embeddings and generation are separate concerns, pick the embedding model independently of which LLM generates the final answer:

questions

Does Claude have a built-in embeddings API? No. Anthropic's API covers messages, streaming, and tool use, but not text embeddings. You need a separate embedding provider (Voyage AI, OpenAI, Cohere, or a self-hosted model) for that layer.

Can I use vector search without Claude? Yes — vector search is independent of any specific LLM. You could use the same Pinecone or pgvector setup with Claude, GPT-4, or a local model; only the generation step changes.

Where does SubToAPI fit in a RAG pipeline? SubToAPI doesn't do embeddings or vector storage — it provides a production API layer for the generation step, turning your Claude access into application keys with streaming, tool use, and usage tracking. Check /pricing and /docs/quickstart to see how it plugs into the "ask Claude" part of your pipeline.
